A project conceived for a virgin forest site, the bold reddish-orange colourway injects a dashing contrast between the architecture & its forested surroundings. The house is comprised of 2 slim rectangular blocks linked by an external stair. Its compact footprint sits lightly on the ground and the upper level seemingly hovers among the forest of trees.

Given that its hillside valley location is “off-the-grid”, this tropical escape will rely on solar energy collection and captured spring water for use.

A Malaysian family long residing in Australia decided during the pandemic lockdown that it was time to realise returning to our shores. They had chosen a location outside of metropolitan KL. The house is organized in a 4000 sq ft linear footprint and tucked close to the split level to ensure that a substantial green space remains at the rear of the lot.

Via online discussions, efforts were made to interpret the spaces into a version of the tropical outdoor lifestyle they were accustomed to while maintaining visual openness through the elongated formation. Differentiated positioning of the 2 patios cater to the variance in the sun’s orientation during the day. To further open up the layout spatially, a private linear passage facing an internal yard and adjoining verandah naturally ventilates and lights up the overall.

Our initial space-planning process led to a stratified 3-level layout [visually seen to be closed-openclosed]. The Living Room volume is a wedge inserted to unify the levels symbolically. The middle floor allows free flowing circulation discouraging un-used spaces that might be created. The central continuous staircase conveys a spatial clarity for all users. From the outset, we were tasked to create screens and window layers without them appearing tacked-on as an afterthought to form the building envelope. This required a conscious downward inflection in every design decision. It became the adopted design process, so by setting ourselves such parameters, we had to question ourselves and our past decisions constantly.

In summation, putting together this house was a joy in itself. The assembly of building and its joinery required faith from all concerned that it would all come together harmoniously in the end. We  welcomed the opportunity it presented to re-learn our craft.

Common wisdom tells us that landing a spaceship means finding a flat landing pad or cutting out a platform to do so on a slope as we were faced with here. To locate the sprawling single level layout, we took the approach to explore numerous options to minimise the intervention to the slope and orientate the building along the natural contours, optimally. The front hovers over the downward slope and the rear rooted on the flattest portion of the site. The hollow below the living spaces becomes a plinth where the utility areas are placed.

Within an acre of a plantation community, the primary objective was to create a home that captures the botanic views beyond by peeping over the trees.

The communal areas are located at the pivot points of the L- shape single level plan. The adjacent covered outdoor living space and pool deck are extended shared spaces. All areas are able to flow together seamlessly on the one level allowing guests and the family to spend time together while affording individual private spaces when desired.

The owners refer to the dwelling as “An escape into ones’ own space”.

The house is held “aloft” by a gable roof on symmetrical modules. The upper structural frames lend it lightness following function. Balance is introduced with weightier recessed Pedestals on the lower level. This is our interpretation of a vernacular house type. Strategically placed louvres create translucent screens to enhance the outline. We reinvented nothing by bringing something new to a pleasing archetype.

Being located adjacent to the “Beringin, paired homes”, this was envisioned as the family club house for recreational purposes.

The land will be terraced to reveal a 12m high canopy. The top & underside of the roof are like 2 contrasting sides of a leaf balanced delicately. Its umbrella stretches over the spaces created within the irregular site boundary. The defined spine on the underside of the roof will gently illuminate the spaces below. The multifaceted shape of the belimbing (starfruit) inspired the 1st sketch & has stuck as a metaphor to its conception.

A fun project for us!

The large lopped roof is the namesake feature of this house. The roof frames are supported by solid wall on West & North Façades. The umbrella-like roof covering is then counterbalanced by the extended overhangs.

The house displays a patterned screen on its glazed East Façade. This blocks out direct sunlight and results in all around comfortable living spaces. The living area is located corner side of the public living space. The sprawling 7.5 meters ceiling height offers panoramic views to the side lawn & sky beyond.

Located at a cul-de-sac in a mature neighborhood, the house had undergone several renovations of varying degrees in the 5 decades of its multi-generation existence. The family was understandably feeling mixed & nostalgic about upcoming changes, could only be served by something new but recognisable. Subtly rearranging the internal circulation & rooms rewards the owners with better living flow within.

Realigning the façade configurations were aimed at finetuning the house into one coherent façade language. A new irregular hipped roof was placed to float perpendicular to the original position. This solution rounds out its renewal with a bold new statement.

The client’s brief was that the house should offer ‘timeless, pared-down luxury’. We constantly explore and test ideas to find an ‘equatorially appropriate’ building language. Here we simply attempted to create a climatically comfortable dwelling for the tropics.   Restraint was called for to avoid an overt style, so as to offer less, visually speaking. Parsimony masquerading as minimalism was definitely not on the cards. With this in mind, we kept to legible (ie. simple) space planning and specified a limited palette of quality materials. Robust detailing was then employed to complete the building enclosure. The house programme was an equally straightforward in that it would be a three bedroom house plus a poolhouse. Generous housekeepers’ utilities are provided on the lower ground level. The Master suite occupies the first floor whilst an outdoor Communal Lounge reveals a clear view to the distant hills. The 2 children’s rooms are on the second floor. We had enthusiastically suggested and agreed that in-situ White Portland Concrete would be used in bare finish for the building frame and wall accents. It’s tactile quality and subtle imperfections would set the tone. Rubble stone inserted into the articulated frame, form protective walls facing east. These prodigious stone walls were not intended to just make a bold statement but to erect a barrier against heat gain. Slit glass windows cap and flank the concrete columns and stone walls to allow light in during the day.  This happily results in the interior being cast with changing light patterns; whilst at night turning the building into a stack of lantern-like boxes.  The finishing touches offer a mix of traditional and modern. Heavily veined Emperador marble and Teakwood floors suggest old world charm.  Pre-patinated bronze door pulls and handles were chosen for their distinct feel in the hand while the selected wares hint at grand days past.
 

Interestingly for us, the client was not interested in expressing an easily definable style and instead was after a solution that would weather the years gracefully alongside inevitable changes in taste.
